Rochdale

A Greater Manchester town, England, at the South Pennines foothills on the River Roch, northwest of Oldham by (8.5 km) 5.3 miles and northeast of Manchester by (15.8 km) 9.8 miles is Rochdale /ˈrɒtʃdeɪl/. Close to the east, are Blackstone Edge, Saddleworth Moor and the South Pennines, whilst on all other sides, bound by towns that are smaller, including Littleborough, Whitworth, Royton, Milnrow, Shaw and Heywood and Crompton, with no or little green space between them, is Rochdale.

One of four Rochdale Metropolitan Borough townships along with Pennine, Heywood, and Middleton (a township which includes Wardle and Littleborough) is Rochdale. Accessed via the (M) A627, which starts in Rochdale at Sandbrook Park and runs in Chadderton to Elk Mill, is the M62 motorway to the south of the town. About a mile south of the town centre is Rochdale railway station.

Founded in 1844 by 28 local residents, as a response to the frequent and high cost adulteration by shopkeepers of basic foodstuffs at the time, was the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society. Is one of the United Kingdom's VG revival finest examples and dates from 1871 is Rochdale Town Hall.

Rochdale became the head of Rochdale PLU which was established on February 15, 1837 despite considerable local opposition under the terms of the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834. Has the highest number of Greater Manchester JA claimants, with 6.1 per cent in early 2010 claiming the benefit of its adult population, is Rochdale.

St John the Baptist Catholic Church is in Rochdale. A further education college with a campus in Rochdale is Hopwood Hall College. Operates four North Manchester area hospitals, including the Infirmary of Rochdale, is the Trust.

The only hospital since the Birch Hill Hospital closure serving the town which occupied at Dearnley the former Rochdale Union Workhouse in 2007, is Rochdale Infirmary. One of the twenty-two clubs for rugby that, in 1895 is original that formed the NRFU, making it one of the first teams of the world, is Rochdale Hornets.
